Paul commenced employment in September 1987 as an Articled Clerk with Maxwell Entwistle & Byrne, a mixed practice with a number of Branch Offices throughout the Merseyside area. During the course of his articles Paul gained experience in a number of areas of law, criminal, family, civil and conveyancing, together with housing and non specific consumer matters.
During that period of time he was based in three different Branch Offices, Maghull, Huyton and, finally, Kirkby.
Upon qualification Paul was employed by Silverman Livermore Solicitors based in Leathers Lane, Halewood. He had sole responsibility for the day to day running of this office. He dealt exclusively with publicly funded matters, both criminal and civil.
Paul was a member of Knowsley Duty Solicitor Scheme.
Thereafter, Paul was employed for 4 years at Dooley & Co based in Queens Drive, West Derby where he dealt with exclusively public funded matters. Paul was a member of the Liverpool Duty Solicitor Scheme throughout this period.
In 2000 Paul joined Quinn Melville and was made a Partner in November 2004.
Since 2000 he has practised purely as a Criminal Defence Solicitor and has continued to cover every single aspect of Magistrates and Youth Court work from simple remands, bail applications, committals, trials, contested committals, abuse of process arguments for which skeleton arguments have been submitted and trials, both within the Adult and Youth Courts.
In addition to this, since his admission as a Solicitor in 1990 Paul has conducted his own Judge in Chambers bail applications before a number of Crown Courts in the North West area and since the introduction of preliminary hearings, he has conducted a number of hearings of this nature before the Crown Court.
Paul’s current Crown Court case load include matters involving the importation of Class A drugs, conspiracies to supply Class A drugs, offences contrary to the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 and also matters contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
In addition to the matters outlined, Paul has also had conduct and continues to have conduct of cases brought under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which require a specialised knowledge of the Act.
In general terms, Paul has been a Duty Solicitor since 1992, having been a member of both the Knowsley and Liverpool Schemes. At the present time, Paul is a member of two Schemes covering both Liverpool City Magistrates’ Court and the Innovative Liverpool Community Justice Centre and continues to attend at Police Stations on a regular basis and seeks where possible to offer continuity from Police Station to Crown Court where appropriate.
